Credit Card Security Threats

Skimming

What is Skimming?

Criminals may clone your debit or credit card to conduct fraudulent transactions using the counterfeit cards. This type of fraud is known as 'skimming'.

‘Card skimming’ is the illegal copying of information stored in the magnetic stripe located on the rear side of the card above the signature panel. The fraudsters steal this information using an electronic device called card reader by concealing it in the card slot of the ATM or POS. In addition they use a tiny spy camera or key pad overlay to steal the card PIN numbers. Usually these devices are installed on the ATMs by the criminals where the unsuspecting customers use cards for routine transactions. Skimming can occur in ATMs, restaurants, shops or other locations.

How Fraudsters Operate?

At ATM Machines:

Fraudsters conceal a skimming device into the ATM or POS’s card slot. This device reads the card and stores its information stored on its magnetic strip. While a customer keys in his PIN number to execute a transaction, the skimming device captures/transfers the data to the fraudsters and the camera or keypad overlay captures the PIN data. This information is then used by the fraudsters to make counterfeit/cloned cards for online shopping or other financial frauds.

At Restaurants / Retail Outlets:

At restaurants and shopping outlets, the card is swiped twice, once for the regular transaction and the other in the skimming device that captures the card information which is retrieved later by the fraudsters.

Tips To Protect Yourself From Skimming:

  • Stand close to the ATM and cover the key pad with your other hand when entering your PIN
  • If you spot anything suspicious like if the card slot has some loosely attached device or the keypad is insecurely attached/tampered with, stop your transaction and  inform the bank
  • Never accept or seek help from strangers at any ATM, even if you’re facing difficulties or your card is stuck inside the ATM
  • Ensure that the card and POS are always in sight while making transactions
  • Regularly check your account balance and bank statements, and report any discrepancies to your bank immediately
  • If you believe the ATM has been tampered with, or you receive an SMS alerts for a transaction not done by you, call 1801801 or +96522248361immideately to report the incident

The fraudsters after obtaining your personal sensitive information will carry out fraudulent transactions through internet shopping or accessing online banking channel to attempt transfers etc.
